No Miracle Ever Came from Playing it Safe
Most people don’t believe in the power of God because we look for logic in faith. Many people are missing out on God's best for them because they're playing it safe.
People need their faith to be ignited.
We live in a generation where faith is a rare commodity, even in those who are saved.
Faith begins where your understanding ends.
If you can understand it all, that's just planning, precision, and strategy. We call ourselves believers, but we don’t have faith.
To shed some light on our limited and sometimes nonexistent faith, we had a chat with ’Crazy Faith’ author Mike Todd.
I think we trust at some point. But why don't we believe?
Mike: We are saved by grace through faith, and the Bible tells us it's impossible to please God without faith (Hebrews 11:6). The scripture tells us that the Son of Man will search the whole world to find faith (Luke 18:8). So, the enemy has put an onslaught on people's faith because he knows it is the mechanism by which the impossible can become reality.
Secondly, I don't think people have stopped believing. I just think they don't believe in the right thing. We have faith in ‘tangible’ things we didn't even build. Yet, we struggle to believe in the same God who created the universe, who knows the number of hairs on our head, and who spoke into existence everything we see today.
We usually experience anxiety and stress when we try to take God's position in our lives.
Therefore, take a hard look at what you believe. I'm daring you to not only believe God for faith, but to believe Him for crazy faith.
What would you say to someone who loses their faith because they feel like God doesn’t listen to their prayer?
Mike: Faith is not insurance, it's assurance. A lot of people want insurance that if anything goes wrong, God's going to fix it. But God is sovereign. He lets you know that He’ll be with you, even if everything breaks down. So it’s upon you to find the assurance that your faith is producing something good within and through you.
My faith in God has not produced the miracle that I want to see in my son’s life, but it has produced the assurance for somebody else to be able to hope again. It’s important to understand that having faith does not guarantee that everything will work out, but the Bible tells us that it rains on the just and the unjust (Matthew 5:45).
It doesn't matter how many Bible scriptures you read or how much you give, we are living in a fallen world. Why would you go through this life without the One who can actually change it? Whether or not He decides to change it, I have to trust that He's sovereign, but it won't be because I didn't believe He could. What matters is that you believe He can.
In your book, you’ve categorized stages of faith using building foundations. Talk about those and how people can consider where they are in this process.
Mike: The most underrated part of every structure is the foundation. Yet, the foundation is the bedrock on which everything that everybody loves is built. If a foundation is built incorrectly, it will bring down the entire house. And many people have not worked on the foundation of their faith. Therefore, they end up trying to build a big vision on a porta potty faith. So, let's expand our faith.
“Let's get a foundation of what God's word says, what faith produces, and what we need faith for.”
Then, let's build wide and deep enough to be able to put whatever God tells us to do on that foundation.
Contractors typically build a bigger foundation than the building they're going to put for expansion later. So, build a faith foundation that can handle getting through college and when you want to build a house for your family later. Build a faith foundation that doesn’t limit God and allows you to reach your purpose.
What does it look like to begin building that foundation?
Mike: I believe so strongly in the Word of God; that is My foundation. The Bible says faith comes by hearing the Word of God (Romans 10:17). So, you can put on scriptures and play them or watch teachings online. I just need you to hear the Word of God. Don't even try to retain it or write it down. Hearing one story, example, or scripture can be the catalyst to changing your faith and allowing you to hope again.
Faith comes by hearing.
I would also encourage you to be mindful of what you're listening to.
Your faith is going by what you're hearing. Consume life-giving content to build that foundation, whether it’s a book or a podcast. That's where your faith will begin to build because you'll hope to see that manifested in your own life. You’ll hope to feel vibrant again and have joy.
What’s your vision and your dream for reaching this next generation?
Mike: My heart is to represent God. I feel like God has gotten a horrible representation. I want to give and promote Him differently. This gift of salvation that we have has changed my entire life. It didn't make me a perfect person, but it made me a progressing person. It took me on a journey that I never want to come off. What I need to do, and what the church has not done a good job of is re-gifting that to other people.
I want to represent God to the lost and the found.
“Jesus deepened His relationships with people who were already disciples and found, but He also reached out to the lost.”
I made it very intentional to say that I'm not choosing between the lost and the found. I talk to people of all spiritual backgrounds for one reason – transformation in Christ.
I was saved, but God wasn't my Lord for a long time. There are many people whose eternity is secure, but their life is hell because they have not made Jesus their Lord. This is why I try to give everything I have because I believe this next generation needs to not just have a Savior; they need a Lord.
So, step into the Lordship of Jesus Christ today. I want you to be transformed, and that only happens when you make Him Lord of your life.
“People think it's a limitation, but it’s freedom to know that everything in your life has already been designed for your good when you allow God to lead you.”
So, my desire for the next generation is that they would know Him as Lord and that we will represent God to the lost and found for transformation in Christ.
Do you ever feel doubt?
Mike: I have a five-year-old son who’s on the autism spectrum and he’s not potty-trained. I have to clean up poop every day. I get to be on platforms where I impact people, but I'll come home and think, “I’d give it all up just see my son be healed.”
I have doubts daily.
And I think the church has done a bad job of letting people authentically see that God is not dismissive of our doubt. Jesus does not listen to the believers cry more than he listens to the doubters’ pleas. So, if you're doubting right now, I want you to know that God is not intimidated or repelled by your doubt. All God asks you to do is bring your doubt to him.
I have doubts all the time, but I take my doubt to the only one who can deliver me. And that's Jesus. I talk to God about my son every single day. I talk to God about my wife, who has gone through a lot. We are not exempt from this. But we have decided to serve God in crazy faith, even if we still have doubt.
So, as you chase crazy faith, remember that it starts with hoping. The Bible tells us that faith is the evidence of things hoped for (Hebrews 11:1). Today, I encourage you to hope again. Don't worry about faith or crazy faith yet, just hope. Hope that you have a good day tomorrow. Hope that God turns the situation around. Hope that you get a better doctor’s report next time. Hope that you can move into a house with more space – just hope.
“When you start hoping, you tap into the first ingredient for you to start walking in crazy faith.”
